All things must pass

On Lower Varzuga's Heli pool in May this year

So that’s it, the end of Roxton’s Varzuga season for another year. Nearly 4,000 salmon to 144 rods. Brilliant.

The end of season summary appears on today, following the last week, ending last Friday. Just six weeks since those heady mid-May days I was lucky enough to fish, where unprecedented sunny, warm weather in the days before we arrived brought a big snowmelt and flood, with the river just starting to fall on the day we arrived. A week of excellent high water fishing for Russian springers was to follow. I blanked on my first evening of fishing, then my first ‘fish’ the next day was a 2 1/2 lb sea-trout (a real beauty). The salmon were yet to come, later that day (he said coyly). Great people, great week. As the waters warmed there was to be more fancy, floating line stuff, but for hard-core, cold-water spring salmon fishing in that first week it was… hard to beat.
