A Tay springer on fly

Tay head gillie Martin Ritchie let me post this picture of I think the first springer on the Newtyle beat. The 12-pounder was caught by Mr Rory Campbell on fly at the Newtyle beat’s Fiddlers Pool on Friday. Not only was he following up a similar feat last season (a January springer) but it was his birthday. So many happy returns in both regards.

The Tay season of course started on 15th and there’s a good shot on Martin’s blog of water invading the Newtyle hut early in the week. A hut I visited two years ago but could only ‘shake hands’ with a Tay salmon on that occasion, so would like to have another crack.

The river had about seven feet of flood on it earlier in the week but produced kelts, rawners and other fish that came in very late on in 2010 to spawn, but two springers in the end. Fishing should settle in now, the conditions look good for middle/lower river (have I got that right Martin?)

Another shot of Mr Campbell's birthday fish.
