Big Tay springer

Congratulations to Allan Rennie up at Newtyle beat on this stonking 28lb spring salmon caught yesterday from the Tay. Wherever in the world you fish, and wherever you are coming from, a salmon of this calibre would be the ultimate prize. Putting it in some context it’s nearly (I like that nearly) double the size of my best-ever fish of 14.5 (it’s best to tell a Norwegian your biggest fish is 14.5 by the way – they will think you’re talking kilos).

Also this morning, saw a photo of a similar sized fish, well 27lb, from the Tyne recently. Like this one, an absolute belter, and caught on the fly. This one was on the harl from the Cotter pool and by all accounts it ran a fair way downstream, head gillie Martin said, with  Allan in hot pursuit. It sounds like a lot of fun, that’s the kind of exercise I could do with.

Hope everyone’s getting thro the winter okay. With big fish like these around and the weather warming there are certainly signs of hope ; D
