View from the Beat 1 hut

It lies alongside the middle Nith’s famous Porter’s pool and the July visit (2 weeks ago, when I took this shot) could not add to our five-fish (2 salmon and 3 grilse) tally from this idyllic spot – in eight years’ fishing! Still the salmon weighed 13lb each, even if the summer grilse were 3lb and 4lb!

Not prolific I know, but what a superb place, especially now the grass is growing back through the cow-proof hardcore. The green hut through the door is one of the old Buccleuch estate Mid-Nithsdale angling club huts. Corrugated iron with a ‘prow’ at the front to help part the floodwaters. There’s another of them on our Beat 3 and they’ve stood there for four decades if not longer, so not bad going…

A fish down Porters with the fly rod taken at 10pm on the recent visit.
