The Varzuga season starts tomorrow with the first band of Roxtons rods arriving at Middle and Lower camps from the wonderfully unglamorous Murmansk airport. Tight lines to them, especially Joe Lamb who I met last year when he was fishing Middle, and persuaded him to give Lower a try. It’s cold out there with snow on the ground and a rising river which should settle in perfectly for Week 1.
The picture is a lovely bright fish I caught from Lower’s home pool, Heli, last May. It hammered an orange Flamethrower tube fished off my trusty 15ft Orvis Shooting Star rod. It was half-way through the week and the rain was falling, which was to give a few inches’ rise in the river and some heart-pounding sport with running salmon snatching aggressively at our flies. It certainly set up a seminal last-day session which thinking about it now ranks as the best fishing day of my life.
