Looking forward to Gaula

It is still eight weeks away, maybe seven but I am already looking forward to a monster salmon mini fishing break on the River Gaula from June 1-3.

The early season on the Gaula is hard-core salmon fishing. I will use my Vision Catapult rod – which is a powerful stick, strong brand new shooting-head fly lines and polyleaders and thick string on the end (30lb fluoro?).
Then there are flies: Green Highlander tubes are popular and Black & Silver/ Sunrays with up to four inch long wings. Hooks will be Norwegian Flyfishers Club veteran Ken Sawada’s heavy trebles, 4 & bigger.

Then if I hook a fish (they run close to 50 lb and bigger though many are in the 16lb to 23lb range) my plan is to hold on, give it some welly when I can get level or downstream on the fish.

And pray.
